What is the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test: Get Qualified

The Health, Safety & Environment test ensures those working in construction have an adequate level of knowledge regarding safety on site. If you are applying for any type of CSCS card to prove your eligibility to work at a certain level, a Health Safety & Environment (HS&E) test will need to be taken in addition to any required qualification.

The test was developed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and a pass is essential to prove your competence and knowledge. Sometimes called the CSCS test, there are 3 main types of test available in relation to your trade and level:

* Operative Health, Safety & Environment Test

* Specialist Health, Safety & Environment Test

* Managerial and Professional Test

What happens on the day?

The test is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions and will take in total 45 minutes to complete. A certificate of your success will be given by the test centre on the same day and you have 2 years to apply for a CSCS card from that point.

Every test includes behavioural case study questions as well as the following 5 essential knowledge sectors:

* Legal and Management

* General Safety

* Health and Welfare

* High Risk Activities

* Environment

Operatives Test

The Operatives Test is the lowest level and shows candidates have a minimum understanding and awareness of the subject. Alternatively, if you have taken the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, you may take the Labourer variation of this test.

Specialist Test

The Specialist Test includes questions relevant to your specific trade and skills, in addition to the case studies and essential knowledge questions. The following trades are available: Demolition, Plumbing, Specialist Work at Height, Highway Works, Lifts and Escalators, Tunnelling, Supervisory, HVACR Pipefitting and Welding , HVACR Heating and Plumbing Services, HVACR Ductwork, HVACR Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, HVACR Services and Facilities Maintenance

Managers and Professionals Test

The Managers and Professionals Test will include additional specialist questions related to the below:

* Demolition

* Construction (Design and Management) Regulations

* Highway Works

How do I prepare?

CITB provides a range of materials to prepare for your test. Digital copies of materials are available for download to your computer, there are iOS and Android applications available for mobile or tablet, and a DVD is also available. If you prefer, hardcopies of the question and answer book can be purchased and delivered to your property. Make sure you select the correct title for the test you will undertake and work thoroughly through the practice questions and answers.

What do I need to bring?

Applicants should arrive at the test centre a minimum of 15 minutes before the start time. You will need to bring your letter or email stating confirmation of your booking in addition to a valid form of identification (passport or photo card driving licence). If you do not have one of these IDs, 2 valid alternatives can be presented, a list of which can be found on the CITB website. Is there any special assistance available? Voiceovers are possible in a range of languages, and signers, readers and translators are available on certain tests. Enquiries about the availability of special assistance can be made when booking.
