The EUSR National Water Hygiene (Blue Card) is required to show a minimum level of competence for those working with the production and supply of drinking water within the UK. The card is a necessity for those who work on reservoirs, treatment works, pumping stations, boreholes, wells and springs, in addition to those working on the water mains network and service pipes.

Any water supplied for human consumption must be of a certain standard and failure to do so is a criminal offence. The Blue Card ensures holders know their roles and responsibilities in regards to potable water supplies and their duties to protect public health through practicing good hygiene standards. Candidates must complete a short half day course in order to apply for the card.

The Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) 'Blue Card' came in to force in 2006, replacing all other hygiene schemes for individual water companies. By creating one course and card for the whole water industry, the process was standardised, eliminating the need for individuals to complete multiple tests and health screenings. Workers are now only required to carry one card, no matter which water company site they are working on. For other available EUSR approved courses, Click Here.

Course Duration

The training is delivered over half a day and includes a trainer lead presentation, discussion, a health screening and finally a multiple choice test. Candidates are screened for any water borne diseases and will be referred to a doctor or occupational health department for checks if there are any concerns.

Card and Registration

Upon successful completion of the training course, the candidate will receive a cover note from the trainer and will be registered on the EUSR. The National Water Hygiene card will be issued within 28 days. The card is valid for 3 years, after which time the training course will need to be retaken.
